Similarities and differences between two brands of menstrual cup available in Australia

 Keeper

Natural rubber menstrual cup

 Lunette

Medical grade silicon menstrual cup

The Keeper versus the Lunette

What is the difference?

What is it made of?

The Keeper is made from the natural sap from the rubber tree.

The Lunette is made from medical grade silicon.

How do I know which is best for me?

The rubber Keeper is not suitable for anyone with a rubber or latex allergy.

The silicon Lunette is suitable for the majority of women who have allergies to rubber or latex.

If allergy is not an issue, price may be important for some women - the Keeper is $45 and the Lunette $57.

What does TGA registration mean?

Both cups are registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration as menstrual products. No other menstrual cups are registered; so these are the only two cups that can be legally sold within Australia. To guarantee the safety of products for your use, registration is quite an involved process, requiring inspection of the manufacturing plant and payment of annual fees.

Please support the companies that are making menstrual cups available within Australia. Don't order other brands over the internet from overseas.

TGA registration: The Keeper is #68249; The Lunette is #157084.

What about sizes?

Both brands of menstrual cup come in two sizes.

How do I know which size to choose?

We are all different in size and shape - the following comments can only be offered as a guide to help you choose.

There is little difference between the two brands in the larger size, however the small Lunette is smaller than the the small Keeper and may better suit younger women, especially if not sexually active.

The Keeper manufacturers recommend the smaller B style for women who have not given birth vaginally and are 30 years of age or younger; the larger A style for after birth and/or after 30.

The Lunette manufacturers recommend that the lightness or heaviness of your flow may be more important to making the right choice before giving birth vaginally regardless of your age; for any women with heavier flows the larger one may be a better choice.

Both companies recommend the larger size after giving birth - our muscles are generally never quite as tight again...

I've been using a small cup and now I've had a baby?

Just try your cup when your periods start again - you may find it is still perfect for you :)

What if I am nearly 30 and never had a baby?

I have been selling the Keeper for about eight years now, and really don't believe the size makes much difference - the diameter of the rim is only few mm different between the two sizes! Are you small or large in build? Are your periods heavy or light? These may be more important considerations in making your choice...

Where are they made?

The Keeper is made in Ohio, USA.

The Lunette is made in Finland.

So far there is no brand manufactured in Australia.

What about guarantees?

The Keeper manufacturer offers a "90-day satisfaction guarantee" - if you can't learn to use it you can return your Keeper to us within 90 days of purchase and we will refund your purchase price less postage and/or bank fees (if it was mailed to you and/or you paid by credit card).

The Lunette does not have any guarantee.

How do I get it in?

1234 Wash hands, Fold, Hold, Insert.

There are a number of different folds you can try - see our photos page

Don't panic if you find it a bit clumsy or bouncy at first - practice will soon help you to learn to ride a bike;)

How do I get it out?

1234 Wash hands, Push (down with your muscles) then relax, Pinch base of cup, Rock it out (side to side or back to front).

A few women find that using a finger to collapse the rim (as in the origami fold for inserting) just at the final stage of removal makes it easier.

How can I order mine?

Details of our ordering system can be found on this page. The quickest way is to send me a text email and I will send you a PayPal invoice to pay securely online. You can try phoning me; but now Alex has retired we are becoming more Grey Nomadic... Mail order is always OK.
